from newtown, connecticut, is what seems like the inevitability now that the next united states secretary of state is going to be massachusetts democratic senator john kerry. nbc news has been able to confirm that senator kerry will be nominated for that job by president obama likely sometime this week. senator kerry is not expected to face significant opposition in the senate. if he does become secretary of state, that, of course, would mean a special election in massachusetts for his senate seat.0 days after the seat becomes vacant. one of the names rising to the top of the list is a potential john kerry replacement in the senate is vicky kenny. vicky kennedy, the widow of the late senator ted kennedy. asked by local news outlets whether she might be up for this job, a spokeswoman for vicky kennedy said, "we have no comment on this at this time." in other words, stay tuned. finally, another state that has just dealt with what massachusetts is contemplating right now, the prospect of replacing a long-time senator, is the state of south carolina. today south carolina governor ni

practicing for the nutcracker because he had to give a speech at newtown. we just -- you just forget unless you've lived it and experienced it. like everybody in your family who's been president of the united states, the rest of us forget sometimes about the humans that are in there. you had to go back to your dad and your mom and after 9/11 and during the wars and everything else. how did they keep everything in perspective? your dad always seemed to keep everything in great perspective. >> that's so true. they're families first. everyone. the obamas and their kids. that's what's most important is spending time with families. and for us, i mean one of the things i like about this special is that it shows real historical perspective from the kennedys through september 11th and actually the tours after september 11th really came to a stop because it was only several months afterwards. so people were still really scared. my mom talks about even her friends who would normally come up for the white house christmas party didn't come because they were still scared to fly. it's hard to remember th

in newtown, connecticut, we wanted to talk about what other countries are doing with their laws, for example, japan, which had just 11 gun-related murders in 2008. the united states at the same time had 12,000. christi christiane amanpour has been looking into this. governor scott was not willing to lay out anything that was reasonable or rational. >> it was remarkable that politicians like that were not willing to give you an answer after many, many attempts. and all you wanted was an answer. other countries have faced some similar incidents in 1996 in scotland, children the same ages as those in sandy hook were massacred. 16 children were killed, and today they are lighting candles for the children being buried. they have done more than that. the government took on what were already tough gun laws and strengthened them. they banned the easy access to handguns and put in a buy back scheme and backed that up with penalties and fines for any violations. the fact is, that worked. it didn't not work it worked. there is a cause and affect, and the crime, while it sort of stayed somewhat stable f
